Social Media Strategist

To date, our superior software and service (>70 NPS) has disrupted the cloud payroll and HR categories but we’ve only just begun to execute our longer-term vision. Our Content Marketing programs are just beginning to gain traction, with the aim of bringing valuable information, advice, and support to our customers and the broader market as an extension of our brand and our company mission.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced social marketer to join our rapidly-growing content marketing team. You’ll help lead our social media strategy, creating native social stories that align with our content program, with a focus on value-driven engagement.

You’ll also be responsible for supporting content distribution efforts, focusing on audience growth through rapid experimentation.

This is a high-impact position in a team that’s integral to Gusto’s organic growth over the next few years. We believe that social media has been underutilized in reaching millennial small businesses, and we’re in search of a social marketer who understands -- and is excited by -- the scale of the opportunity before us.

What you’ll do day-to-day

  • Define and drive our social media strategy in collaboration with stakeholders across content, community, and communications.
  • Manage and execute on our social strategy with the help of one or more contractors. We’re currently focused on Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest, and Twitter, but are looking to expand to others as well.  
  • Own ambitious KPIs related to social audience growth, increasing referrals, maximizing brand visibility, and increasing audience engagement.
  • Manage a robust paid distribution budget with a performance-marketing mindset, constantly optimizing to achieve the best results.
  • Identify emerging platforms and trends that Gusto can proactively “own” over its competitors.
  • Play a role in providing counsel to senior company leadership, when appropriate, about key social media trends as they relate to small businesses.
  • Manage all third-party social media vendor, agency, and/or tool contracts and relationships.
  • Create and maintain a social media “best practices” manual and ensure all team members model and share it.
  • Bring Gusto’s identity and mission to life in social contexts, representing and shaping our personality and voice and tone such that we become a trusted source of information for millennial small business owners.  


  • 3 - 5 years managing social media platforms preferably for a brand relevant to small businesses.
  • Breakout success in growing audiences and creating viral, highly-engaged social media campaigns
  • Experience with advanced social media analytics
  • Experience building highly successful paid distribution campaigns on social media
  • Experience with building successful programs using social-native video
  • Enthusiasm for aggressive goals and the willingness to go the extra mile to achieve them.
